Foot Strength: The Way to Improving Function and Athleticism

As humans, we have evolved when it comes to technology, clothes, cars...the list goes on! One of the more famous evolutions is footwear! It has been a blessing for our feet to help improve performance and prevent injuries. However, there is a balance people must keep in mind. It is imperative to wear shoes during athletic events and walking around to save your feet. But with wearing shoes constantly over time without giving your feet a chance to "breathe"

Our feet have tons muscles that need to be worked on, and fascia that needs to be mobilized daily such as the muscles in our upper back, glutes, and neck. Over time, if we do not address our feet health, issues can start arising down the road. When it comes to movement, some strength coaches follow up the kinetic chain by looking at the feet first. The feet are a group that, as the kids say, are slept on for that reason. If the feet are addressed, overcompensation issues such as plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, or even problems in the muscles of the hips.

Here are some ways to improve foot health and foot function

  • 1.Massage the foot thoroughly with a lacrosse ball, tennis ball or your hands! (a partners hands work too!
  • 2.Big toe raises for strength! Do sets of 20 reps per toe. This will be tough!
  • 3.Foot splaying! Spread your toes. Repeat 15 reps
  • 4.Walk around barefoot more! Whether its on the grass, sand, or even dirt…get grounded!!
  • 5.Arch forming exercises! Towel Pulls or toe curls for arch forming. 1-2 sets of 25 reps

These methods will help improve foot health, function, and health. Which can lead to improved athletic performance. The key to success is consistency over time when it comes to the stretching and strengthening.
