Cupping- What is it and can it benefit you?

Cupping therapy is an ancient form of alternative medicine in which a therapist puts special cups on your skin for a few minutes to create suction. It is another form of soft tissue work that is designed to break up adhesions and muscle tension in order to relieve pain. Some people even use the cups as a form of deep tissue massage.

The way cupping works is by using suction from the cups to pull the skin up and create space for increased blood flow that results in healing properties being brought to the area. There are a few different types of cupping that can be performed. One type that is performed is dynamic cupping, which involves gliding the cups along the skin to break up adhesions. Another type is called static cupping, and that is performed by leaving the cups on trigger points for about 5 minutes at a time then releasing the skin.

Originally, flame was used with cups to cause a negative pressure, bringing the skin to a rise in the cup. Now, it's common to use a handheld suction to perform a more therapeutic and intense result.

  • Increased blood flow
  • Release toxins
  • Break up adhesions
  • Tissue healing
  • Treat digestive issues

Cupping can be extremely effective for those who have been struggling with chronic tension in an area of the body, along with being used for health benefits. One thing to be aware of with this therapy is that there is a good chance you will be left with some bruising or "cup kisses." This bruising is mild and will resolve within 5-10 days if not sooner and will have no lasting side effects.
